The Barnes Foundation is an often underappreciated gem of a museum in the Philadelphia suburb of Merion, Pennsylvania.

Established in 1922, by the manufacturer and art lover Alfred Barnes, the Barnes collection is housed in a quintessential old Main Line mansion on a small road, a lane really. Inside is a startling number of Impressionist and post-Impressionism French art, arranged the way Dr. Barnes decided about 80 years ago. Sprinkled among the French icons, are African masks, paintings and sculpture.

The collection presents a bit of sensory overload, especially for the first-time visitor, attempting to 'see it all'. In my humble opinion, that attempt is futile. If we go by the numbers posted on the Barnes Foundation website, the sheer number of works is almost overwhelming:

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (181), Paul Cézanne (69), and Henri Matisse (59), Pablo Picasso (46), Chaim Soutine (21), Henri Rousseau (18), Amedeo Modigliani (16), Edgar Degas (11), Vincent van Gogh (7), Georges Seurat (6), Edouard Manet (4), & Claude Monet (4).

All these glorious works are displayed in what is essentially a large home. Works are grouped together from ceiling to floor, just as Dr. Barnes designed. It's the art world's sugar rush feeling you get when enter an enticing bakery or candy store.

The Barnes Foundation has limited public hours, made by appointment. The Barnes also offers a variety of courses, including highly regarded courses in it's Arboretum.
